Ruminations of Red, Blue and Gay

Opponents of gay marriage have collected 170,000 signatures in favor of an amendment to end the practice. But the measure needs the Legislature's approval to appear on the 2008 ballot, and lawmakers refused to vote on the proposal last month. Republican Governor Mitt Romney, who is expected to run for president in 2008, and other opponents of gay marriage responded by suing to try to force the lawmakers to act. - International Herald Tribune
I fully expect Romney to use this as a wedge issue in '08, perhaps it's his best defense over being considered too liberal? Either way, I might stand by Obama even if he's against marriage and FOR civil unions...if it helps beat out a Red.
Funny about the Red vs. Blue states, and the historical RED SCARE?
"Red Scare" has been retroactively applied to two distinct periods of strong anti-Communism in United States history: first from 1917 to 1920, and second from the late 1940s through the late 1950s These periods were characterized by heightened suspicion of Communists and the fear of widespread infiltration of Communists in U.S. government. - Wikipedia

Read about Operation Red Scare 2005, it should scare you shitless

Yesterday, March 1, the College Republicans officially and publically launched an anti-Devaney/Woon Slate campaign by creating a display case and locating it strategically in the highest pedestrian area of PSU. The display case had comparisons of the Devaney/Woon slate to communist leaders of the past, namely Stalin and Lenin. They were also listed as Devaney/Woon slate members along with Erin Devaney, Molly Woon, Mary Fletcher, Kayla Goldfarb, and Adas Lis. After much student complaints they altered the display case by removing the pictures of Lenin and Stalin and adding a large red hammer and sickle. They also tried to fit into university policy by advertising an event, which they were supposed to do in the first place. The event that they decided to advertise was the ''Ebony Ball,''a dance held every year by the Black Cultural Affairs Board and the Association of African Students. Once word reached the members of these respective groups, a large grouping went down and demanded that the flyers be removed because it misrepresents the mission and beliefs of the groups in questions. - Portland Indy Media

Best Obama Story Yet!

Early this month, at the invitation of Rick Warren, Obama spoke to a hall full of conservative Christian evangelical activists gathered at Saddleback Church in Orange County. Warren, author of the bestseller "The Purpose Driven Life," is among the most successful and popular preachers in the world. Saddleback is his city on a hill, a sprawling campus set above the smooth, clean boulevards of the most suburban of places. His is the kind of congregation where Warren's joke about the authoritarian rule of suburban homeowners associations brings a knowing laugh.

It is definitely not the sort of place you would expect a liberal big-city Democrat to feel at home.

Warren has an aphoristic style of preaching. Remarking on opposing political inclinations, he said: "People ask, 'Pastor Rick, are you right-wing or left-wing?' I'm for the whole bird. One-winged birds fly in circles."

To keep the bird flying straight, Warren had also invited one of Obama's Senate colleagues, Republican Sam Brownback of Kansas. Brownback is one of the most conservative members of the Senate, and a favorite of the folks who fill Warren's church.

This day, the right wing of the bird flew first. Brownback has a boyish, plain-country countenance. He knew the crowd and the place and was winning in his talk.

Brownback teased Obama about straying beyond his natural habitat. He recalled that he and Obama had spoken together previously in front of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People. Just the mention of the NAACP drew a nervous chuckle from the crowd. Brownback might as well have said he had parachuted in behind enemy lines. He said he had been given a polite reception, then had yielded the stage to Obama, who received a raucous welcome, as if Elvis had come on stage.

Brownback then turned toward Obama and told him today would be different. "Welcome to my house," he said; the crowd roared.

When Obama followed Brownback to the Saddleback lectern, he thanked him, but added that he had to correct one thing the Kansan had said: Obama said he felt very much at home in Pastor Rick's church.

"Sam," he said, "this is my house too. This is God's house."

That simply and quickly, Obama was again completely at home in a room full of strangers, and they with him.

Depp as Freddie Mercury: Confirmed talks!

He is a keen guitar player whose admiration for the Rolling Stones stretched to modelling his character, the pirate Jack Sparrow, on the mannerisms of Keith Richards.

Now the Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp, is being lined up to play a rock star for real in a biopic of the late Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury.

Robert de Niro's company, Tribeca Productions, is said to be behind the project, which Brian May, the Queen guitarist, confirmed was in development. "Discussions are at an early stage," he said on his website.

May described Depp as "fantastic". "He would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen. I don't think I can say any more right now," he added...- Independent UK

Sounds like they need one hell of a script, maybe I should get on that...hmm.

Colin attempts to stab from the front

``All of my contacts within the Army suggest that the Army has a serious problem in the active force, and it's a problem that will spread into the Guard and Reserves,'' Powell said.

Any proposal to add forces should be made with a ``clear'' mission outlined and a definite schedule for how long they will be there, Powell said. The U.S. military can't quell the sectarian violence in the country, a task that must be accomplished by the Iraqis, he said.

Powell said the bipartisan Iraq Study Group was correct in its assessment that the situation in Iraq is ``grave and deteriorating.'' The independent commission said the U.S. should set a goal of pulling back most combat troops by early 2008 and focus on training Iraqi police and military forces.- CP on Face the Nation

Bayh says bye to '08 bid

"There's obviously room to the right of both Clinton and Obama, but who that will be isn't clear," Jordan said. "Today is a good day for everyone else in the field because Sen. Bayh would have been a formidable candidate." - LA Times

Dr. Callie RULES

Size-12 Bliss

SIZE doesn't matter any more to "Grey's Anatomy" star Sara Ramirez , who plays Dr. Callie Torres. "There's catered food everywhere you look - I gained 25 pounds in four months," the big-boned hottie tells January's Glamour. "Nobody ever said, 'You're getting a little heavy.' Instead, they wrote scenes for me to dance around half-naked in my underwear. I went to Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer, and said . . . 'Why me? . . . She just looked at me and said, 'Work it.' " Ramirez did, and is comfy as a size 12. -Page Six

Check out Sararamirez.com for Sara's Tony acceptance speech, she won for Spamalot....I had no idea! Nor did I know she's from San Diego, GO CALI!

What others see is those reviews, a Tony Award and back home, proud people like Ole Kittleson speaking of her with tears in their eyes. "She was such a wonderful role model for the Latino kids," says Kittleson. "She had such a strong feeling for and was so proud of her Mexican heritage. When I saw the show in New York, I waited for her backstage. Out she came in her jeans, with her hair in a ponytail hanging out of a baseball cap, just as modest as she always was. I just burst into tears, I was so happy for her." - Sara's high school teacher!

AWW! Methinks I smell a musical episode of Grey's Anatomy coming!

Serenity cast saves Con!!!!!!

Firefly convention gets cancelled at the last minute but the cast still shows! From Akin's World:

All in all, the weekend was very cool, especially considering that there was no alternative. The California Browncoats pulled off a miracle here... and fans worldwide have helped out by donating more than 5K as of Saturday night, the last time I heard an official count! These are folks who had nothing to do with Flan, who were not coming on there own, but who took money from their pocket and donated it to help pay for the B3... the weekend might actually be in the black, last I heard... excess goes to Equality Now, if I heard correctly.

And the Big Damn Heroes... has anyone ever heard of any actor attending an event for free? I haven't... yet none of them were paid. SEE MORE PICS!

From the California Browncoats website:

"Booster Entertainment apologizes for the great inconvenience, but due to unforeseen circumstances, Flanvention is cancelled. An official notice will be posted within 10 days."

This is, of course, a huge imposition for all of us who spent hundreds and even thousands of dollars on our tickets, photos ops, special events, accommodations and airfare, are are not able to get refunds at such short notice. Over 150 people from across the country and overseas are already at the hotel, with more expected on Friday.

However, Browncoats are extremely resourceful.

SPIKE LEE DOES THE RIOT

Now comes word that Lee will make the the violent race-based eruption in Los Angles (following the 1992 "not guilty" verdicts of four white officers who were videotaped beating motorist Rodney King) the subject of his next film.

According to 'Variety,' 'L.A. Riots' will be produced by Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment under Universal Pictures and John Ridley ('Three Kings') is attached as the project's scriptwriter.

"This isn't about some cavalcade of stars, but rather a truthful and realistic examination of what happened, what the ramifications were and where we are now, in hopes that something like this doesn't happen again," Lee told the industry trade magazine.

The filmmaker is also reportedly developing a sequel for 'Inside Man,' which is his highest grossing film, to date starring Denzel Washington, Jody Foster and Clive Owen.

David Lynch's New Movie Weirder Than The Last As Was Expected

MOVIE REVIEW | INLAND EMPIRE
The Trippy Dream Factory of David Lynch
By MANOHLA DARGIS

There are, in the movies, few places creepier to spend time than in David Lynch’s head. It is a head where the wild things grow, twisting and spreading like vines, like fingers, and taking us in their captive embrace. Over the last three decades these wild things have laid siege to us even as they have mutated: the deformed baby of “Eraserhead” evolving into the anguished distortions of “The Elephant Man,” the Reagan-era surrealism of “Blue Velvet,” the serial home invasion in “Twin Peaks” and the meta-cinematic masterpiece “Mulholland Drive,” a dispatch from that smog-choked boulevard of broken dreams called Hollywood.

Mr. Lynch revisits that bewitched boulevard in the extraordinary, savagely uncompromised “Inland Empire,” his first feature in five years, his first shot in video and one of the few films I’ve seen this year that deserves to be called art. Dark as pitch, as noir, as hate, by turns beautiful and ugly, funny and horrifying, the film is also as cracked as Mad magazine, though generally more difficult to parse. I’m still trying to figure out what the giant talking rabbits — which seem to be living in Ralph Kramden’s apartment, as redesigned by Edward Hopper — have to do with the weepy Polish woman who may be a whore or merely lost or, because this is a David Lynch film (after all), probably both.

Johnny Depp is Dali?

dali_bio One day it will have to be officially admitted that what we have christened reality is an even greater illusion than the world of dreams. - Salvador Dali

RICHARD AND Robert Dupont, of the old Andy Warhol daze in N.Y.C., remembered enough about those heady times to earn associate producer credits on the upcoming "Factory Girl" movie about Edie Sedgwick. Now the Dupont brothers are writing their own screenplay about that fabled artist of the surreal, the late Salvador Dali. They hope to produce through their own Double-Take Productions, and want Blitz664_JohnnyDeppJohnny Depp as the painter of all things odd. deppIf you've seen Johnny in his flamboyant "Pirates" outings, you know Dali would be a walk in the park . - Liz Smith of the NY Post
