Biphobia, Bisexuality, Angelina Jolie

The fencesitters? Suspicions still haunt the bi/homo divide
by Cheryl Dobinson, creator of "The Fence" (a bi women's zine)

Great quote from article (IMHO):
She (Sharon Larade, lesbian) thinks that part of the reason for negativity and skepticism about bisexuality is people's internalized homophobia.

"It's like when straight people encounter gay people and then get insecure and have to show they aren't gay by being homophobic," says Larade. "There is an exclusionary hierarchy, where gay and lesbian is 'more pure.'

"We all have a responsibility to educate and inform ourselves and each other and to push each other a bit around this," says Larade.

She doesn't think that bisexuals should be the ones who have to make it happen. Cultivating an openness and acceptance across the gay/bi divide is all our of work.

MIDDLE EAST: PATHETIC?

Asked whether the Administration's policy of spreading democracy in the Middle East had produced instability and democratically elected terrorist governments, Dr Rice angrily called the suggestion "pathetic".

There was always going to be turmoil as democracy took hold, she said, and there was no going back to policies that never tackled the region's problems. - Sydney Morning Herald

US President George W Bush, who commented on Lebanon from Germany 24 hours after violence had spiraled out of control, described the situation as "pathetic". He also expressed concern that Israel's offensive into Lebanon could destabilize or even topple a Lebanese government that Washington supports. He made things worse and further infuriated the Arab street by expressing Israel's "right to defend herself". - International Middle East Media Center

Hizbullah's decision to snatch two Israeli soldiers evinced poor judgment and even worse timing, but the Israeli response has been out of all proportion to the original incident. The numbers speak for themselves. As of Wednesday evening, Israeli attacks had killed at least 292 civilians in Lebanon, while Hizbullah rockets had killed 13 noncombatants in the Jewish state. Lebanon has approximately 3.5 million people. On a per-capita basis, that means that as of Wednesday, the rough equivalent of 9/11 has happened every day here for eight days. - Western media fail to tell the real story in Lebanon

Microsoft ready to do the robot

Microsoft ready to do the robot

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Maybe it's the robotic dog resting in the corner or the R2-D2 "Star Wars" droid on the floor, but Tandy Trower's office is not a typical workstation found on the Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) campus.

Trower heads the Microsoft Robotics Group, a nine-person operation with the modest trappings of a start-up company but grand ambitions befitting a $44 billion software giant....

...Another breakthrough is the software's ability to simulate a robot's motions incorporating laws of physics like gravity and friction so tests can be done without risking expensive machinery, Trower said.

He is most intrigued by how the software deals with programming for "concurrency", a high-level technical challenge when multiple functions occur simultaneously.

Dealing with "concurrency" or parallel processing is a challenge that extends beyond the robot group, and across the company's core PC software businesses.

Computers are moving from single to multiple processors to obtain results faster, but writing software for parallel computing systems poses a new set of technical hurdles. Robots provide the ideal testing platform, because they are the natural evolution of the PC, Trower said.

"The challenge for the developer of the future is the same thing that a conductor in an orchestra would have," Trower said. "You have all these different players, they are all playing their separate pieces, but how do you get them to blend together in a harmonious piece?"

Ancient Egyptian Glass

Tut's gem hints at space impact

Thing of beauty: Tutankhamun's Pectoral with desert glass scarab

In 1996 in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Italian mineralogist Vincenzo de Michele spotted an unusual yellow-green gem in the middle of one of Tutankhamun's necklaces.

The jewel was tested and found to be glass, but intriguingly it is older than the earliest Egyptian civilisation.

Working with Egyptian geologist Aly Barakat, they traced its origins to unexplained chunks of glass found scattered in the sand in a remote region of the Sahara Desert.

But the glass is itself a scientific enigma. How did it get to be there and who or what made it?

Thursday's BBC Horizon programme reports an extraordinary new theory linking Tutankhamun's gem with a meteor.

Sky of fire

An Austrian astrochemist Christian Koeberl had established that the glass had been formed at a temperature so hot that there could be only one known cause: a meteorite impacting with Earth. And yet there were no signs of an impact crater, even in satellite images.

American geophysicist John Wasson is another scientist interested in the origins of the glass. He suggested a solution that came directly from the forests of Siberia.

"When the thought came to me that it required a hot sky, I thought immediately of the Tunguska event," he tells Horizon.

In 1908, a massive explosion flattened 80 million trees in Tunguska, Siberia.

Although there was no sign of a meteorite impact, scientists now think an extraterrestrial object of some kind must have exploded above Tunguska. Wasson wondered if a similar aerial burst could have produced enough heat to turn the ground to glass in the Egyptian desert.

Jupiter clue

The first atomic bomb detonation, at the Trinity site in New Mexico in 1945, created a thin layer of glass on the sand. But the area of glass in the Egyptian desert is vastly bigger.

Whatever happened in Egypt must have been much more powerful than an atomic bomb.

Dr Mark Boslough, Great Sand Sea (BBC)
Boslough's specialism is modelling large impacts

A natural airburst of that magnitude was unheard of until, in 1994, scientists watched as comet Shoemaker-Levy collided with Jupiter. It exploded in the Jovian atmosphere, and the Hubble telescope recorded the largest incandescent fireball ever witnessed rising over Jupiter's horizon.

Mark Boslough, who specialises in modelling large impacts on supercomputers, created a simulation of a similar impact on Earth.

The simulation revealed that an impactor could indeed generate a blistering atmospheric fireball, creating surface temperatures of 1,800C, and leaving behind a field of glass.

"What I want to emphasise is that it is hugely bigger in energy than the atomic tests," says Boslough. "Ten thousand times more powerful."

Defence lessons

The more fragile the incoming object, the more likely these airborne explosions are to happen.

In Southeast Asia, John Wasson has unearthed the remains of an event 800,000 years ago that was even more powerful and damaging than the one in the Egyptian desert; one which produced multiple fireballs and left glass over three hundred thousand square miles, with no sign of a crater.

"Within this region, certainly all of the humans would have been killed. There would be no hope for anything to survive," he says.

Dr Aly Barakat with desert glass in hand (TV6/BBC)
Barakat holds up one of the many, huge chunks of glass in the desert
According to Boslough and Wasson, events similar to Tunguska could happen as frequently as every 100 years, and the effect of even a small airburst would be comparable to many Hiroshima bombs.

Attempting to blow up an incoming asteroid, Hollywood style, could well make things worse by increasing the number of devastating airbursts.

"There are hundreds of times more of these smaller asteroids than there are the big ones the astronomers track," says Mark Boslough. "There will be another impact on the earth. It's just a matter of when."

The Princess and the Paparazzi by Stephen King

Even more briefly we saw the ugly paparazzi feeding frenzies that probably ensue every time Britney hits the street...and one image, almost as stark as a police crime-scene photo, of a red-eyed, red-nosed Britney holding her baby to her chest, seeming to ask the camera, Where am I? Who am I? How did I get here? Why are you looking at me?

The answers, in brief, are these: You are in public; you are a pop creation now entering the final third of your active performing career; you got here as a result of youth, publicity, and prurient interest. The answer to the last question is the most unpleasant. We are looking at you, Brit, because we cannot yet look away.

Oscar Watch '07: Raping Dakota

Dakota Fanning's dark rape role touted as potential Oscar winner

New York: Dakota Fanning is a bundle of talent at the young age of twelve, and is all set to play the most challenging role of her career, as she deals with intense scenes of rape and child abuse in her upcoming film titled 'Hounddog'.

'Hounddog' is a story of abuse and violence, and would require Fanning to be raped and appear naked or clad just in her underpants in few scenes.

Fanning's mother, Joy, and her Hollywood agent, Cindy Osbrink, said that the movie is a possible Oscar contender for the preteen star.

"It's not just the rape scene - the whole story is challenging Dakota as an actress. And I've never been so proud of her in my life. I've seen the dailies, and in every scene she gets better and better", the New York Daily News quoted the star's agent Osbrink, as saying.

Fanning's carefully choreographed rape scene has already been filmed, but the production that had been halted for a short while due to lack of funds over the controversial subject of child abuse, has successfully started again.

Personally, I think this is WAY too young for a child actress to play a rape victim. Tho, there's not a lot of portrayals for young survivors to find courage in. Still...

Gay athletes still struggle with 'coming out'

CHICAGO (Reuters) - As a 340-pound (154-kg) nose tackle in the National Football League, Esera Tuaolo was a pretty tough guy. But as a closeted gay athlete he recalls living in constant fear.

"I felt like if I had come out while still in the NFL I would have been in physical danger," Tuaolo told Reuters this week. "They would have taken me out -- gone after my knees, or tried to paralyze me."

Hawaiian-born Tuaolo, who played for the Atlanta Falcons in the 1999 Super Bowl game, was in Chicago to participate in the weeklong Gay Games VII sports festival, and appeared on a panel called "Brokeback Locker Room," about the challenges facing gay and lesbian athletes.

Panelists agreed that although homosexuals now enjoy increased acceptance in public life, the sports arena has been a tough nut to crack.

"Sports is the last frontier in terms of homophobia," said Helen Carroll, sports project coordinator with the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco.

LEBANON ON FIRE

LONDON (Reuters) - Some of the world's major aid agencies said on Friday that British Prime Minister Tony Blair had got his policy on the crisis in Lebanon "horribly wrong" by failing to call for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.

Blair's stance has put his country at odds with the rest of the international community, seven agencies, including Christian Aid, Save the Children and Oxfam, said in a joint statement.

"The situation on the ground is grim and getting worse," said Janet Symes, Christian Aid's regional manager for the Middle East.

"The prime minister has in the past provided admirable leadership on humanitarian crises. We can't understand why he has got this one so horribly wrong."

Blair's government, like that of the United States, has refused to publicly call for a ceasefire, putting it at odds with the United Nations and most of its European allies.

Explaining the government's stance, a spokesman for Blair said on Friday said the prime minister had "made it clear right from the beginning that he wants the conflict to end".

"What, however, people appear to want him to do is to call for a unilateral ceasefire.

"Civilians are the main victims of this and a ceasefire would be in all their interests," said Geoffrey Dennis, head of CARE International UK.

Massachusetts same-sex marriage pioneers split up

BOSTON (Reuters) - The lesbian couple whose landmark lawsuit helped Massachusetts become the only state in America where same-sex couples can marry legally have split up, a spokeswoman said on Friday.

Julie and Hillary Goodridge and six other gay and lesbian couples sued Massachusetts for the right to marry and won when the state's highest court ruled narrowly for them in 2003.

Their suit helped spark a nationwide debate on gay marriage.

The women "are amicably living apart," Mary Breslauer, a spokeswoman for the couple said. "As always their number one priority is raising their daughter, and like the other plaintiff couples in this case, they made an enormous contribution toward equal marriage. But they are no longer in the public eye, and request that their privacy be respected."

PEACE BAD FOR BUSH

Saying there are no "quick fixes," U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice laid out a series of proposals Friday for a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict, but did not call for a ceasefire, ahead of her weekend visit to the region.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said a ceasefire 'would be a false promise if it simply returns us to the status quo.' (Evan Vucci/Associated Press)

Rice said Israel must take all possible care to avoid harming innocent civilians and civilian infrastructure while exercising what she called its right of self-defence.

However, "it's important to remember that the cause of the current violence was Hezbollah's illegal attack from Lebanese territory," she added.

"It is unacceptable to have a situation where the decision of a terrorist group can drag an entire country, even an entire region, into violence."

FREE MP3'S FOREVER?

Pirate iPod Sony BMG releases first song that works with all music players

By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — Record label Sony BMG Music Entertainment, which got into trouble last year when it sold copy-protected CDs that inadvertently threatened PCs with a computer virus, has become the first major record label to sell an unprotected digital song.

Jessica Simpson's A Public Affair went on sale this week at Yahoo Music, and unlike every digital song sold on competitors Apple iTunes, Napster and Rhapsody, it is compatible with all portable music players. The song is in the open MP3 format and can be transferred to an Apple iPod or players by Creative, Samsung and others.

Record labels have refused to sell songs without digital rights management (DRM) in the past. Consumer advocates hope this is the beginning of a trend.

"It's about time," says Fred von Lohmann, a senior attorney with the public interest group Electronic Frontier Foundation. "This is an important signal that the labels may be finally realizing that DRM is hindering the size of the market."

Sony BMG played down the significance of the release. The song, on Yahoo, is "personalized" — there are 500 versions, each including a different first name, from Aaron to Zach, that consumers can search for. The label says it would have been too complicated to release all 500 with DRM.

Ian Rogers, who runs Yahoo Music, wrote about the deal on the Yahoo Music Blog, calling it a breakthrough for music fans.

"As you know, we've been publicly trying to convince record labels that they should be selling MP3s for a while now," Rogers wrote. "Our position is simple: DRM doesn't add any value for the artist, label ... or consumer. The only people it adds value to are the technology companies who are interested in locking consumers to a particular technology platform."

Apple competitor eMusic has quietly become the No. 2 digital music service after iTunes by selling unprotected MP3s. However, eMusic sells only music from independent labels, and Yahoo and others have been calling for major producers to follow eMusic.

Ted Cohen, a former top executive at EMI Music who now runs consultant TAG Strategic, says rivals will be watching the results closely. "This gives us all something to go on, to see what the consumer reaction will be," he says.

He doesn't think it signals the beginning of the end of DRM. "If anybody thinks DRM will be gone in six months, well, that's not about to happen."

After Sony BMG's ill-fated copy-protected CD plan, the label was forced to recall more than 5 million CDs and pay refunds. At the time, Sony BMG and label EMI Music said all new U.S. releases in 2006 would be copy-protected. Those plans have since been shelved.

Bush caught off-guard in chat with Blair
An open microphone caught President Bush in an unguarded moment Monday as the escalating crisis in the Middle East prompted him to use an expletive in a conversation with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Bush and Blair were unaware that an event at the Group of Eight summit was a photo opportunity, with media representatives present. Blair later turned off the microphone.

The president was expressing frustration at the United Nations' stance on the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon.

Apparently not expecting an open mike to pick up his remarks, Bush told Blair: "See the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's over."

Earlier Monday, Blair and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for the deployment of an international force in southern Lebanon to help end the spiraling conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Islamic militant group that holds seats in the Lebanese government. ( Full story)

The United States and Israel say that Hezbollah receives financial and political assistance, as well as weapons and training, from Iran and Syria.

The fighting began last week after Hezbollah guerrillas abducted two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.

"What about Kofi Annan?" Bush asked Blair. "I don't like the sequence of it. His attitude is basically cease-fire and everything else happens."

Blair responded, "I think the thing that is really difficult is you can't stop this unless you get this international presence agreed."

Destiny's Revenge

Where Destiny leads

For LeToya, a hit song as a solo artist may be the best revenge

No one would blame the one-named R&B singer LeToya for feeling bitter or cynical about the music business. Six years ago, as a member of Destiny's Child, she suffered one of the worst indignities in pop history.

After mounting tensions between her and the group's manager, Mathew Knowles (who's also, by the way, Beyoncé's father), LeToya switched on her TV one day to see that she and another contentious member of the group had mysteriously vanished from the new "Say My Name" video, replaced by two other girls. This, on a track that not only featured LeToya's vocals but that she co-wrote.

Yet the singer claims she never felt anger, bitterness or a need for vengeance. "It was more just hurt," she insists. "I knew I would never get to see them again. I couldn't call Beyoncé just to talk. The only way of seeing them was in magazines and on TV, showing how successful they were. But I never felt like I didn't want them to be successful."

Not even a little?

"No," LeToya answers.

These days the woman born LeToya Luckett can afford to put a pretty spin on things. The last few weeks, her first solo single, "Torn," has reached No. 2 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop list, and her self-titled debut album hits stores today.

Over the last two years, LeToya's hometown of Houston has exploded into hip-hop's current hot spot. To make the most of it, her album features cameos from hot local rappers like Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Bun B and Slim Thug. Just as Ciara was the first to marry R&B to Atlanta's "crunk" sound, now LeToya is the first to join R&B to Houston's "chopped and screwed" style. "I used to always hear that sound in the local clubs," says LeToya. "Now it's heard everywhere."

It was in a Houston grade school that LeToya first met Beyoncé. She says she always wanted to be in a group like Destiny's Child and never saw herself as a solo artist. Ergo, she claims the rumors that she wanted so sing more leads in Destiny are false. "Everyone knew their role," she says. "I was singing support."

Instead, she says, the tensions came because Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland got to see their families all the time (since their relatives were all involved with the group). She and the other expelled member (LaTavia Robertson) never got to see theirs.

After the Destiny dustup, LeToya formed a group with Robertson called Angel. But, she says, "things weren't organized. We never even got a manager."

LeToya used some of her Destiny royalties to open a clothing store in Houston (which carries Beyoncé's fashion line). Still, she knew she'd sing again one day.

When she hooked up with an L.A. management company, LeToya thought they'd connect her with another group. Instead, they encouraged her to go solo. Her demos with them led to a deal with Capitol Records.

Recently, LeToya says she ran into Beyoncé at a show "and we all congratulated each other. Then we talked about shoes and handbags. It was all good." It's amazing what having your own hit can do.

Wilson distraught at Playboy Mansion ban

Monday, July 17 2006, 14:29 BST - by Susanna Regan

Luke Wilson has revealed that he did not know what to do with himself after being banned from the Playboy Mansion.

The Old School actor attempted to get a friend into a party at the infamous hotspot, but was caught and blacklisted for over a year.

He told WENN: "I got DNA-ed from the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. That means "do not admit" - that's their special word. I tried to get a friend in and I'd shown up and they said 'Who are you with' and I'm like 'I'm with my brother Owen' and they're like 'We need to see him.'"

The claim left Wilson in a tight spot, as his brother's distinctive features have become unmistakenably recognisable after successful films such as Shanghai Noon and The Wedding Crashers.

He revealed: "It was actually my friend Eckelman, who doesn't look anything like Owen. I was not allowed to go there for a year and a half. I had to make kind of a tearful phone call to Mary, the woman who kind of runs the operation. I said, 'Mary what I did was stupid. It was wrong. Hef's [Hugh Hefner] been so generous to me...' I actually did, I think, cry on the telephone!"

NEW AGE GOOD FOR BANNING CELEBRITIES?

Sacred Bowl Blessing Blasts Bernhardt Out
BERNHARD-BITTEN A few critics, reviewing Sandra Bern hard's recent off-Broadway show "Everything Bad & Beautiful," com plained that the usually ferocious stand-up comic had lost some of her edge.

Maybe they should have checked out her behavior offstage, where, production sources claim, Bernhard was her old public self - snarly, vulgar, insulting and a gigantic pain in the neck.

So unpleasant was she to be around that the staff of the Daryl Roth Theatre, where Bernhard played her final performance Sunday, is going to hold a "sacred smoke bowl blessing" - a sort of New Age ceremony, using herbs - to rid the theater of Bernhard's "trail of toxicity," says a source.

The atmosphere at "Everything Bad & Beautiful" wasn't always so poisonous.

At first, Bernhard was easygoing and fun to be around, sources say.

But her behavior changed once ticket sales started to fall off.

She blamed her producers - including Daryl Roth (who owns the theater that bears her name) - for not spending enough money to promote the show, telling everyone within earshot that they were "cheap."

But the producers, sources say, spent plenty of money advertising the show, and have been absorbing losses for weeks.

At times, Bernhard was playing to houses that were only a quarter full.

She also berated production assistants, telling one, "I'm going to hand you your ass on a plate, and you're going to have to eat it."

Bernhard often skewers celebrity egos and celebrity culture in her act. And so production staffers were slack-jawed when she would refer to herself as "the star."

She would say things like: "A star is not treated this way," and, "A star always gets this."

By the end of the run, "the star" was barely speaking to anyone involved in the show.

Roth was so upset that she didn't attend Sunday's closing performance.

The producer is planning to be at the ritual cleansing ceremony later this week, however.

Even the ushers will be there.

Says a source: "Sandra was snarly to them, too."

Bernhard, via e-mail, responded: "I had an amazing time. The audience was always rocking, and, for me, every night was a party. And, as always, New York is the bomb."

Iraq Olympian Attacks: WHY? The Question You Really Should Be Asking!

Fashionista

If you believe Islamic Fundamentalists have declared war more on Islamic moderates than America...this article will make more sense.

Gunmen Kidnap Iraq Olympic Committee Chief

Gunmen kidnapped the head of Iraq's Olympic committee and more than a dozen employees Saturday after storming a sports conference in Baghdad, police said. The kidnappers wore camouflage Iraqi police uniforms and security guards outside the meeting said they did not interfere because they thought the gunmen were legitimate law enforcement, police said.

Ahmed al-Hijiya, president of the committee, was taken in the assault, which came a day after the coach of Iraq's national wrestling team was killed by kidnappers, said police Lt. Thaer Mahmoud.

Others taken Saturday included the deputy head of the Olympic committee, Ammar Jabbar al-Saadi; the chairman of the Taekwondo Federation, Jamal Abdul-Karim; and the chief of the Boxing Federation Union, Bashar Mustafa.

Two guards were killed, one while trying to flee the building.

Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani told reporters that the kidnapping was carried out by 'gangs' and not security forces.

There were conflicting reports on the number of people taken but Maj. Gen. Adnan Thabet, commander of the ministry's special forces, told The Associated Press that al-Hijiya and 20 others were kidnapped.

The Sunni coach of Iraq's national wrestling team, Mohammed Karim Abid Sahib, was seized with one of his wrestlers Thursday as they left a sports center to buy sweets in the northern neighborhood of Kazimiyah, where the team was preparing for a tournament.

The coach was shot to death while trying to escape later in the day. The wrestler escaped, according to police and wrestling officials.

The team pulled out of the tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

In other violence, Iraqi soldiers and gunmen clashed in Baghdad, leaving at least three people dead and 11 wounded, police said.

Seven people were injured in a mortar attack near Haifa Street in downtown Baghdad, blocks from the Green Zone, which houses U.S. and British embassies and the Iraqi government.

Similar clashes broke out blocks away, injuring four and killing two civilians. U.S. troops sealed off the area after the attacks, said Iraqi Army Maj. Salman Abdul-Wahid.

The area along Haifa Street has seen heavy violence in recent weeks, which prompted Iraqi leaders.

Iraq's parliament voted Saturday to extend a nearly two-year state of emergency in Baghdad for another 30 days. The violence along Haifa Street prompted the last extension.

President Jalal Talabani called for establishment of a national front to prevent a sectarian civil war.

In a statement late Friday, Talabani accused Saddam Hussein loyalists and Sunni religious extremists of fomenting sectarian conflict, and he urged establishment of 'a national democratic front that includes all those who believe in a new Iraq and are eager to have a democratic system.'

Thousands of Iraqis demonstrated Saturday in the Shiite district of Sadr City in Baghdad and the southeastern cities of Kut and Amarah, praising the leaders of Hezbollah and denouncing Israel, and the United States, for Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Mexican Recount!

Defiance in the streets
But Lopez Obrador's supporters remained unconvinced.

"We are ready to do whatever is necessary," said Belasario Cruz, 32, a farmer from Tabasco. "We are tired of the rich having everything and the poor having nothing."

There were smaller demonstrations planned in cities including Tijuana on the U.S. border and San Cristobal de las Casas in the south.

Lopez Obrador, a former Mexico City mayor, has asked protesters to be peaceful and law-abiding, but also said the government would be responsible for any flare-up of anger because officials had rejected his demand for a manual recount.

There were no immediate reports of arrests or violence.

But the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City urged U.S. citizens "to avoid downtown Mexico City and surrounding areas" during the protest, noting that "even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence."

In a meeting with foreign correspondents, Lopez Obrador said there were more irregularities in the balloting than under the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which ruled Mexico until it was ousted by President Vicente Fox in 2000.

Calderon belongs to Fox's conservative National Action Party

"The National Action Party learned from the fraudulent practices of the PRI and it exceeded them," Lopez Obrador said.

A devoted following
Lopez Obrador's millions of extremely devoted followers religiously follow his message of helping the poor and downtrodden.

He has in the past headed protests that turned disruptive or violent.

In 1996, he led farmers and fishermen in sometimes-violent takeovers of state-owned oil wells to demand compensation for damages from an oil spill.

Last year, as Mexico City mayor, he led huge street protests that forced Fox to fire his attorney general and drop a legal case that would have kept Lopez Obrador out of the presidential race.

Treading carefully
These days, Lopez Obrador must walk a tightrope. If he appears too radical, he risks hurting his party and its chances in the next presidential elections in 2012. If he appears too moderate, he risks disappointing his core supporters.

"His political stock would increase greatly for 2012" if he finds a way to concede defeat gracefully, political analyst Oscar Aguilar said.

Lopez Obrador says he will challenge the result in electoral tribunals and in the Supreme Court. He claims hundreds of thousands of votes for him remain uncounted, miscounted or voided.

Electoral authorities say the law allows such a recount only where credible evidence of irregularities exist for a specific polling place.

Aguilar predicted that Lopez Obrador would never recognize Calderon's narrow electoral victory.

"He will never concede defeat," Aguilar said. "Once the election results are certified, he will open a permanent campaign of criticizing the government."

Study finds organ genes differ by gender

Mouse experiment may lead to sex-specific drugs; brains actually similar

WASHINGTON - Thousands of genes behave differently in the same organs of males and females, researchers reported Friday, a finding that may help explain why men and women have different responses to drugs and diseases.

Their study of brain, liver, fat and muscle tissue from mice showed that gene expression — the level of activity of a gene — varied greatly according to sex. - More @ MSNBC

Jacko, Gay?

Jacko is shocko at his associate's gay porno

BY MICHELLE CARUSO
DAILY NEWS WEST COAST BUREAU CHIEF
SANTA MONICA, Calif. - A wide-eyed Michael Jackson testified he "was shocked" when he saw a video of his ex-associate actively directing a gay porn film, according to videotaped deposition shown in court yesterday.

The no-show singer's ghostly image was projected on a 4-foot-by-4-foot screen in the trial of a $1.5 million breach-ofcontact suit filed by his former video producer Marc Schaffel in Santa Monica Superior Court.

In the sworn testimony, which was taped in London's Dorchester Hotel on Sept. 23, 2005, and May 22, 2006, the pop star says he told his advisers to sever all ties with Schaffel as soon as he found out about his past employment as a porn filmmaker.

"I was shocked by what I saw. ... [Schaffel] was directing two guys. They were naked from head to toe ... and he was telling one what to do with the other and he grabbed their penis or something," said Jackson, who was dressed in a dark, striped, button-down shirt.

"I didn't believe it!" said Jackson, who had a house full of hard-core heterosexual porn magazines and DVDs when cops searched it in November 2003 before his arrest on child molestation charges.

Schaffel's lawyer, Howard King, asked Jackson if he was shocked by the "gay-themed show." But the entertainer said he was shocked to learn Schaffel had been "in that circle."

Jackson, who has twice been accused of sexually molesting teenage boys but never convicted, said he didn't think "mothers" would approve of his association with someone who made "gay pornography."

Jackson's insistence that he knew nothing of his ex-associate's porno past has opened the door for Schaffel to return to the witness stand and refute the claim.

In an earlier trial brief, King warned that if the singer went that route, Schaffel was prepared to reveal "their intimate discussions" and discuss "Jackson's sexual proclivities."

Jackson's videotaped testimony is set to continue today for about two more hours. Jurors will see three hours, 40 minutes of the pop idol in total.

In earlier testimony yesterday, Schaffel shed more light on a top-secret $300,000 cash payment he made to someone in South America immediately after Jackson was charged with molestation.

He said the money went to someone he labeled "Mr. X" in Argentina. He said it was "a very private transaction of a very sensitive nature for Mr. Jackson" and that he didn't record it in his business ledger at the time because "it was during the criminal matter."
